From sonar to skincare: the ultrasonic scrubber

The ultrasonic skin scrubber runs on high-frequency sound waves — ultrasound — the same fundamental technology first harnessed by physicist Paul Langevin during World War I to build sonar for detecting submarines. By the 1950s, doctors were using therapeutic ultrasound in physical therapy, and researchers later showed that these vibrations could also help active ingredients pass into the skin, a process called sonophoresis. In a facial, a slim blade vibrating tens of thousands of times per second does two jobs at once: it gently deep-cleans and exfoliates the surface (that satisfying “polish”), and it helps hydrating serums travel deeper than they would on their own.
