What it is, and why an alga makes it
Astaxanthin is the pigment that makes salmon flesh pink, flamingos pink, and cooked shellfish red. They do not make it — they eat it, and it accumulates.
The original producer is a freshwater microalga, Haematococcus pluvialis, and the reason it makes astaxanthin is the interesting part: the alga produces it as a survival response to stress — UV light, nutrient depletion, high salinity. It is, quite literally, a sunscreen an organism builds for itself.
That is a genuinely good reason to be curious about it. It is not, on its own, evidence it will do the same for you.
On “1,000 times stronger than CoQ10”
You will see astaxanthin sold with a multiplier — hundreds of times stronger than vitamin C, a thousand times stronger than coenzyme Q10, and so on.
These figures are not invented. The commonly cited one comes from a measurement of singlet oxygen scavenging, one specific antioxidant reaction, measured in a test tube.
What it does not mean is that astaxanthin is a thousand times better for your skin. Antioxidants work on different radicals in different compartments — vitamin C in water, vitamin E in fats, carotenoids elsewhere — and they regenerate one another. A high number on one reaction in a laboratory says nothing about outcomes on a face.
Whenever you see a big multiplier on a supplement label, the useful question is: measured how, and against what outcome?
What the human trials show
- A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial found the astaxanthin group had an increased minimal erythema dose — more UV needed to redden skin — and less moisture loss in the irradiated area than placebo.
- A 2021 meta-analysis of eleven studies found significant improvements in skin moisture and elasticity.
- An open-label trial in 28 women combining oral 6 mg daily with topical astaxanthin over eight weeks reported reduced wrinkle depth, smaller age spots and improved elasticity, texture and moisture.
Effects appear between roughly six and twelve weeks. Carotenoids accumulate in skin over time, which is why nothing happens quickly.
The counterweight
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of dietary supplements for skin photoaging in healthy adults reached a blunter conclusion: there is currently insufficient evidence to recommend astaxanthin for treating skin photoaging.
Both things are true at once, and it is worth understanding why. The positive trials are small — 23 participants, 28 participants — often in Japanese cohorts, and one of the strongest was open-label with no placebo and combined oral with topical, so the two cannot be separated.
Where we land: moisture and elasticity have reasonable support. Wrinkle reduction is trending positive but not settled. Photoaging treatment is not established. Astaxanthin looks like a decent contributor to an antioxidant strategy and a poor candidate for a hero ingredient.
This is not sunscreen — and this matters in Florida
Increasing the minimal erythema dose sounds like sun protection, and it is easy to misread as permission to stay out longer. It is not.
Carotenoids raise your baseline tolerance slightly. Broad-spectrum SPF is what actually blocks the radiation causing photoageing and skin cancer risk. No oral antioxidant replaces it. Read our Florida sun-protection guide for what genuinely works.
Food sources and the wider carotenoid family
Astaxanthin comes chiefly from salmon, trout, shrimp and crab. But it is one member of a family worth eating broadly.
Lycopene — tomatoes, watermelon, pink grapefruit — has its own photoprotection literature and inhibits tyrosinase, the pigment enzyme also targeted by licorice root. Beta-carotene comes from carrots, sweet potato and dark leafy greens.
Carotenoids are fat-soluble, so they absorb far better eaten with some fat — olive oil on the tomatoes is doing more than flavour. And a varied intake beats a single isolated supplement, which is the pattern running through this entire library.
