Cherry Blossom Extract for Skin
Prunus yedoensis · Prunus lannesiana — “sakura”
The flower behind our Radiance & Hydration facials — and one of the few botanicals with a genuine anti-glycation story rather than a marketing one.
At a glance
What it is
Sakura is the ornamental cherry of East Asia, most associated with Japan, where the blossom has been celebrated and eaten — salted petals in tea and sweets — for centuries. It belongs to the rose family, which puts it in good company for skincare.
On labels it appears as Prunus yedoensis or Prunus lannesiana flower extract. Worth knowing: the raw flower is fragrant, and fragrance irritates reactive skin. Better formulas use a fermented or processed extract that keeps the actives and drops the scent.

The science
Cherry blossom's most interesting property is anti-glycation, and it is worth understanding because almost nothing else in your bathroom addresses it.
Glycation is what happens when sugar molecules attach to proteins — including the collagen and elastin holding your face up. The result is advanced glycation end-products, or AGEs: stiffened, discoloured, less springy protein. It is a slow process, driven by diet and sun, and it contributes to both dullness and loss of bounce.
- AGE inhibition. In fibroblasts — the cells that build collagen — cherry blossom extract suppressed AGE formation and the cell death that AGEs cause.
- MMP-1 suppression. Under solar UV, human skin cells ramp up MMP-1, the enzyme that dismantles collagen. Cherry blossom extract reduced that response by damping the MEK/ERK signalling pathway.
- Soothing. At 2%, it reduced visible irritation in skin exposed to harsh detergents. At lower concentrations it protected cells from UVB-driven free radical damage.
How strong is the evidence?
Better than most botanicals, with caveats. A randomised, placebo-controlled trial followed 60 women aged 30–50 for eight weeks and found significant improvements in hydration, elasticity, collagen index, texture and wrinkles versus placebo.
The honest caveat: that trial tested an oral supplement combining sakura with Rosa roxburghii fruit extract. You cannot cleanly credit the results to cherry blossom alone, and it says nothing about a cream.
The topical work is laboratory work — real, mechanistic, but cells rather than faces. Researchers studying it have said plainly that cosmetic labelling claims for cherry blossom have outrun the evidence. We'd rather tell you that than repeat the claim.
How to use it
Cherry blossom is gentle and sits comfortably in a morning antioxidant step or an evening calming one. Look for it in brightening lotions, hydrating serums and gentle creams at 1–3%.
Because its strength is anti-glycation and UV-related collagen protection, it works best preventively — alongside daily SPF, not instead of it. If sun damage has already arrived, that is a treatment-room job.
