Guide to Waxing: Before, After & In-Between Care

Face & body waxing · brows, lip & chin, full face, underarms, arms, legs, chest & back · by a licensed esthetician in Fort Myers, FL

Great waxing results are one-third what happens in the studio and two-thirds what happens in the days around it. This is the complete playbook — how to prep, what to do (and skip) in the first 48 hours, and the simple weekly rhythm that keeps skin smooth and ingrown-free between visits. It applies to every waxing service we offer; the by-area notes cover what's different for face, underarms, legs, and chest & back.

🎯 Why care matters more with waxing

Waxing removes hair from the root, which means every follicle is briefly open — for about 24–48 hours your skin is more permeable and more sensitive than usual. Everything in this guide exists to do three things: keep those open follicles clean (prevents bumps and breakouts), keep the skin calm (prevents irritation and darkening), and guide the new hair up and out (prevents ingrowns). Do this consistently and waxing genuinely gets easier: on a steady 3–4 week rhythm, regrowth comes in finer, sparser, and less painful each time.

📋 Before your wax — the checklist

  • Grow it to ¼ inch (about the length of a grain of rice — roughly 2–3 weeks after shaving). Too short and wax can't grip; the appointment won't be worth your money.
  • Don't shave between now and your visit. Even one pass resets the clock.
  • Exfoliate gently 24–48 hours before — a soft washcloth or mild scrub lifts dead skin so hair releases cleanly. Not the day of.
  • Moisturize daily the week before — hydrated skin releases hair more easily and hurts less.
  • No sun, tanning, or self-tanner for 24–48 hours before. We can't wax sunburned skin — it will lift.
  • Come with clean, product-free skin in the area — no lotion, oil, or makeup on it.
  • Comfort tips: wear loose clothing to your appointment; if you're sensitive, take ibuprofen 30–45 minutes before and go easy on coffee and alcohol that day (both can heighten skin sensitivity).
  • Timing tip: skin is often extra sensitive in the days right before your period — book mid-cycle if you can.

⚠️ Medication & product rules

These matter — waxing over thinned skin can cause lifting. Tell us about any of these at booking and we'll adjust or reschedule the area.

Using Stop before waxing
Accutane (isotretinoin) Wait 6 months after finishing — no exceptions
Prescription retinoids (tretinoin, Retin-A) 2 weeks off the area
Retinol / adapalene (OTC) 7–14 days off the area
AHA/BHA acids, benzoyl peroxide 7–10 days off the area
Topical steroids About 1 week after last use
Antibiotics Finish the course; skin is photo-sensitive and slower to heal
Blood thinners Waxing is possible but bruises more easily — tell us
Also reschedule if you have sunburn, broken or irritated skin, an active cold sore (for facial waxing), or a recent chemical peel in the area. It's a quick rebook — protecting your skin always wins.

🕐 The day of your visit

  1. 1Shower before you come — clean skin waxes better, and you'll want to skip hot showers afterward.
  2. 2Skip lotion, oil, deodorant and makeup on the area being waxed — anything on the skin interferes with grip.
  3. 3Wear loose, breathable clothing — especially for underarm, leg, chest or back waxing. Freshly waxed skin hates friction.
  4. 4Tell us everything — medications, skin conditions, first wax nerves. Thirty seconds of honesty makes the whole visit better and safer.

⏱️ The first 24 hours — strict but short

Follicles are open. Think: clean, cool, loose, and out of the sun.

  • No heat: hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, hot yoga. Lukewarm showers are fine.
  • No sweat: skip the gym and heavy workouts — sweat carries salt and bacteria into open follicles.
  • No swimming: pools (chlorine), hot tubs, and the Gulf (bacteria) — give it 24 hours.
  • No sun on the area — freshly waxed skin burns and darkens fast. This is the #1 rule in Florida.
  • No touching with unwashed hands, and no tight clothing rubbing the area.
  • Soothe it: a little pure aloe vera, or products with chamomile or centella, calms redness quickly. Pinkness and tiny bumps right after waxing are completely normal and settle within hours.

🧖 Hours 24–48 — easing back

  • Sun: keep the area covered or shaded through 48 hours, then SPF 30+ any time it's exposed — always, but especially the first week.
  • Workouts: fine again after 24 hours; shower promptly afterward and keep the area clean and dry.
  • Moisturize daily from day 1 with a light, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic lotion — soft skin lets new hair exit cleanly.
  • Hold off exfoliating until 48–72 hours after your wax.
  • Underarms: no conventional deodorant or antiperspirant for 24–48 hours (details in the by-area notes below).
  • By the second morning, skin should feel calm and completely smooth — now your only job is keeping it that way.

🔁 Between visits — the weekly rhythm that prevents everything

  1. 1Day 3–4: start exfoliating again. Gentle chemical exfoliation is the gold standard — a leave-on lotion or serum with salicylic acid (BHA) penetrates into the follicle where ingrowns start; lactic acid (AHA) is a gentler surface option. Physical exfoliation (soft washcloth, mild scrub) 2–3× a week works too — pick one approach, don't stack both aggressively.
  2. 2Every day: moisturize. Dead, dry skin forming a cap over the follicle is how ingrowns happen. Daily light moisturizer keeps the door open for new hair.
  3. 3Never shave between waxes. One shave resets regrowth to stubble, restarts the coarse-hair cycle, and makes your next wax patchy. If length bothers you mid-cycle, message us — sometimes we can bring your next visit forward instead.
  4. 4Rebook at 3–4 weeks. That's when hair is back to ¼ inch. Booked on rhythm, each wax is faster, less painful, and longer-lasting than the one before — the Silk-Smooth Wax Pack saves 20% on exactly this cadence.

🔍 Ingrown hairs — prevent, identify, treat

Is it an ingrown?

  • A small dark dot under the skin = a new hair growing up normally. Leave it alone — it's on schedule.
  • A red, tender bump with no visible hair = an ingrown growing sideways under the skin.

If you get one

  • Warm compress a few minutes daily + keep up gentle BHA exfoliation around (not on) broken skin.
  • Never pick, squeeze, or dig — that's how a small bump becomes a scar or an infection.
  • Stubborn or recurring ones: mention it at your next visit — we can extract safely and adjust your plan. Anything painful, spreading, or infected-looking belongs with a doctor.

📍 By body area — what's different

🌸 Brows, lip & chin, full face

  • Redness fades fastest here — usually within 1–2 hours.
  • No makeup on the waxed area for 24 hours — foundation in open follicles causes breakouts.
  • Be extra careful with the retinoid rules above — most people's actives live on their face. Tell us what's in your routine and we'll wax around it.
  • Active cold sore? Reschedule lip waxing — waxing can spread it.
  • Daily SPF matters most here; facial skin darkens easiest post-wax.

💪 Underarms

  • No deodorant or antiperspirant for 24–48 hours — aluminum and alcohol sting open follicles and clog them. Alcohol-free witch hazel is a good interim odor option.
  • Wear loose sleeves the first day; skip the workout for 24 hours.
  • This area loves consistency — underarm regrowth gets dramatically finer after 2–3 waxes on rhythm.

🦵 Arms & legs

  • The big one here is sun — arms and legs are the most sun-exposed areas in Florida life. Covered or SPF for the first 48 hours, no exceptions.
  • Skip tight leggings/skinny jeans day one; friction is the main irritant.
  • Legs are the easiest place to keep the exfoliate-and-moisturize rhythm — a BHA body lotion after showers does it.

🧍 Chest & back

  • These areas sweat the most — the 24-hour no-gym rule matters most here. Shower promptly after workouts once you resume.
  • Breathable cotton shirts the first two days; sweat trapped under synthetics is how chest/back breakouts start.
  • Prone to congestion? Pairing waxing with our Back-Clearing Facial keeps the skin itself clear while the waxing keeps it smooth.

☀️ The Florida factor

Southwest Florida delivers near-tropical UV nearly all year, and freshly waxed skin is temporarily defenseless against it — sun on just-waxed skin doesn't merely burn, it can leave hyperpigmentation (lasting dark patches), especially on medium and deeper skin tones. The rule is simple: 48 hours of shade or cover on any waxed area, then SPF 30+ whenever it's exposed. Salt water and pool chlorine also belong on the 24-hour wait list. Year-round smoothness and year-round sunshine coexist just fine — this is the one habit that makes it work.
